Changes for 2012

Effective January 1st:
  • The Edmonton Grant MacEwan and Running Room YREs have moved to the Kinsmen's Sports Center and the St Albert Trekkers have taken over the walks
  • The Leduc YRE is reduced to one stamp and the Wetaskiwin club is in charge.
  • The Jasper YRE is reduced to one stamp.
  • St Albert YRE #132 has moved to the St Albert Best Western, 460 St Albert Trail.
  • The St. Albert bike is now a seasonal and will open in May until October. The new shorter distance will be 14 km not 13 as stated in the Calendar.
  • Sherwood Park YREs have a new start point at the Franklin Inn 2016 Sherwood Dr 
  • Cold Lake is now a mail in. Contact me at walksalot2@shaw.ca or call 780-998-1033 to register and get the instructions

WEM YRE

Gold's Gym at West Edmonton Mall has moved to the Lower Level, Suite 1764, 8882-170 St. NW T5T 4J2. Entrance 8 is off 90 Avenue on the ground level (covered parking), directly below the Palace Casino.

There is construction on the route. Pauline recommends that you walk on the east side of Memorial Drive as a detour.

The Waterton Seasonal is now closed, it will open again on the May long weekend 2012.

Mountain Walks

There is construction at the Cave & Basin in Banff, this means that parking is limited for the routes that start from there and you will have to be prepared to make a detour to reach the trail head.

ALBERTA CHALLENGE Program

Qualifying Events: Year Round and Seasonal Events within Alberta, only

Levels:
BRONZE               20 different YRE or Seasonal Events
SILVER                 10 more events for 30 different YRE or Seasonal Events
GOLD                   10 more events for 40 different YRE or Seasonal Events
PLATINUM          All remaining YRE & Seasonal Events in the year submitted, in 2012 there are 47 they must all be in the booklet

Awards: Certificate for each level

No cost other than the normal walk fee. There is no time limit.

WALK ALBERTA Program

The Walks Alberta booklet is free to all, and is designed to support the Volkssport Association of Alberta (VAA) program for walking with Alberta's Volkssport Clubs throughout the Province.

NOTE: 2012 locations require: Banff, Barrhead, Beaumont, Calgary, Camrose, Canmore, Cardston, Cold Lake (mail-in), Devon, Edmonton, Fort Saskatchewan, Fox Creek, Frank (mail-in), Grande Cache, Grande Prairie, Hinton, Jasper, Leduc, Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, Millet, Morinville, Red Deer, Sherwood Park, St Albert, Stony Plain, Sylvan Lake, Waterton, Wetaskiwin, and William Switzer Park

There is no time limit to completion. There are no extra costs or fees to enroll in this program, other than the normal event fees per walk.

Check the YRE/Seasonal walk boxes or contact your Alberta Club President for a free booklet or contact the VAA (by email or Canada Post), and one will be mailed to you.
